SAM NEWTON
Sam Newton is one of the original Florida Highwaymen, a legendary group of African American artists who began painting and selling landscapes along Florida’s highways in the 1950s and '60s. Born in 1948, Newton became known for his vivid depictions of Florida’s natural beauty—sunset-lit beaches, royal poinciana trees, wetlands, and stormy skies—all painted with speed, skill, and emotion. His work, like that of his peers, was created during a time of segregation and limited opportunities, making his success all the more significant. Newton is celebrated not only for his role in the Highwaymen movement but for his continued dedication to painting Florida's untouched wilderness with authenticity and reverence.
